This book is a collection of academic essays written by many noted Korean political scientists. The book's subtitle, The Socioeconomic Origin of Today, points up that it aims to reevaluate, from a contemporary context, the outcomes of PARK's regime. The great influence of the latter upon politics, economy, society and culture in Korea today is documented in the pages of this book. By examining the PARK era, the authors aim to help the readers discover the socioeconomic origins of modem Korea. No other period in Korean modem history is as controversial as that of President PARK Jung Hee during the 1960s and 1970s when he controlled the country for eighteen years until he was assassinated in October 1979. Contentious debate about the achievements of the general-turned-president continues today. On the positive side, the Park era is regarded as a period when the nation freed itself from poverty through seemingly miraculous economic development. On the negative side, his rule is considered a "dark ages" when the South Korea people were ruled by a fascist leader and his oppressive military regime. PARK's military dictatorship crushed the people's desire for democracy and left the country with sociopolitical problems and conflicts that remain today. The PARK era can be summarized as the "miracle in East Asia" propelled by an "antidemocratic dictatorship."
