“—I don’t know.”
When I give this answer to the question asking about my father’s name, everyone looks at me incredulously like some
strange animal. However, I think that not knowing my father’s name is just as natural as their knowing their father’s
name. Sometimes, I want to ask them how they know their father’s name, or how they can be certain the person they
think is their father really is—but then, I would be talking more than I want to. I won’t be bothered to retort and just tell
them the reason why.
“—I’m an illegitimate child.”
(An excerpt from the preface)
“This fight is not my fight.”
This fight was not Daedo-oh’s, but between Cheolgimaeng and Guryungyo.
“This boat is not my boat.”
That was true, as well. The name, Cheolgimaeng, was created only by chance, and it was not his fate.
“But why must I die?”
There was no reason. Even if there was a reason, it wasn’t important. That was life.
(An excerpt from Chapter 1: A Slicing Wind Cuts Through the Earth)
--------------------------------------------------------------
Daedo-oh, who was born illegitimately, is a common, average-looking low-level soldier who does not defeat villains with his great skills, nor tries to recover his identity when he has no knowledge of how he was born. However, he does not compromise with the hypocrisy and greed of the ones in power. His goal is to live only by his own strength, and for his survival, he fights and defeats the Nokrimmang and Jongnan factions, the most powerful groups in the nation. Daedo-oh, the energetic tale of the low-level soldiers, shows that “even lowly soldiers each have their own lives.”
