Since its inception in 1977, Yekyong Publishing Co. has diligently labored in one cultural field: art books. Through the years, the company has grown to become an important art publishing specialist in Korea, devoted to the exposition of Korea’s classical heritage and cultural achievements by introducing Korean native art works and cultural treasures through the medium of world-class photographs and illustrations. The company is recognized as one which consistently “raises the bar” of art publishing standards in its native country through production of superb volumes on world art and design as well as art books for children. Yekyong’s efforts have produced important art collections like Korean Paintings (kor. “Hanguk eui hoehwa”) (8 vols), a comprehensive compilation of paintings from Korea’s modern art masters; Folk Paintings from the Joseon Dynasty (2 vols), a rich exploration of Korea’s traditional aesthetics; Seokgulam, an introduction to the Buddhist art works at Korea’s famed grotto; A Pictorial Guide to Korean Costume (2 vols.), now available on the world market in English translation; and The Don Hwang Caves, awarded the Silver Prize, 1997 by the APPA (Asian Pacific Publishers Association). Yekyong’s 14-volume English-language edition of Korean Art Treasures, with authoritative explanations and commentaries by 43 leading experts in Korean Art, may currently be found in libraries and research institutions across the world. Over 8,000 copies of the English edition of Korean Art Treasures have been distributed in North America by the prestigious art publisher Harry Y. Abrams, Inc. But arguably the most important titles Yekyong have produced to date are the “Korean Art Book” Series and “Art Library” Series published since 2000. Four volumes from the 'Korean Art Book' Series in English translation (White Porcelain, Celadon, Buddhist Sculpture, Folk Painting) have been distributed in Europe by British publisher Laurence King /Thames and Hudson Publishing Company, and in North America by Art Media Resources. Also, in 2005 Yekyong was honored to have four of its titles (20th Century Korean Art, Critiques of Contemporary Korean Architecture, Earthenware and Celadon, White Porcelain and Buncheong Ware) selected for inclusion in the “Top 100 Books from Korea” featured at the Frankfurt Book Fair, at which Korean publications were highlighted.
