Beginning with the founding of a progressive literary quarterly Changjak gwa Bipyeong (eng. Creation and Criticism), in 1966, Changbi Publishers established a general book publishing company (Changbi Publishers, Inc.) in 1974 and began producing titles in the fields of literature, humanities, society, general reader education, and literature for children. The company is well-known in Korea for its struggles during the 1970’s and 1980’s, when the then-military government oppressed Changbi Publishers for their support for the anti-government People’s Literature movement. By 2007, Changbi has produced more than 1600 unique titles, adding more than 60 new books per year to their prolific catalogue. One of the most trusted and reliable publishers among Korean readers, it is well said that “a Changbi book is always a good book.” Among Changbi’s many best-loved titles are Hwang Seokyeong’s The Land of Strangers; Yi Eunseong’s historical novel Tales of the Ancient Korea. Shin Gyeongnim’s poety collection Peasant Dance, Yu Hongjun’s My Exploration of Our Cultural Heritage, and Hong Sehwa’s A Taxi Driver in Paris. Changbi offers a wide range of books, from inspiring children’s books, exciting novels to cutting-edge writings by world scholars and intellectuals. The uncompromising standards of Changbi’s editing board assure that the company will continue to exercise the utmost discrimination in its project selection and thereby continue to enjoy the love and support of its readers.
